Good Girl Dinette: Great for Good Boys & Girls

by Jessica on July 30, 2010

Kid Hit Menu Items: GGD actually has a kid’s menu that doesn’t pander. It consists of smaller portions of other menu items for $3, as well as simple sides. You might get your kid to eat the beautifully blistered deep fried Imperial Mushroom Rolls ($5.75). Or maybe he or she will just go for the fries with cilantro, garlic, and chiles ($4.75, $3 small size). My kid will only eat the non-spicy version, which they’ll gladly make upon request. Bowls of pho ($9) are delightfully slurpable.

Adult Perks: The rich, piping hot curry chicken pot pie, with its slightly funky, spicy gravy and flaky crust. GGD’s rice noodle salads/bun have that perfect balance of protein, vegetable, and carbohydrates.

Pros: Large room. Durable seating that’s somewhat flexible to configure. Also bench seating on one side of the room. Proximity to the Highland Park Gold Line station.

Cons: Bathroom down the hall. Might freak some kids out a bit. But whatever, they’ll deal or get over it. Lunch is weekends only.

Changing Station: No

High Chairs: Yes

Parking and Access: Easy peasy. Street parking or city lot across the street.

Other Tidbits: Good Girl Dinette, where the “American diner meets Vietnamese comfort food,” embodies the best of Los Angels. The down-to-earth vibe, earnest but sophisticated DIY sensibility, interesting twist on a genre of cuisine, and fair prices makes it an organic product of its Highland Park neighborhood. Plus, it’s located on the side street-facing storefront in a gorgeous historic building where during weekend dinner you might hear the thumping bass lines of banda music blaring from a gathering at the social hall next door. Groovy multi-culturalism and distinct style makes GGD worthy of being a backdrop of an Adrian Tomine graphic novel, should he ever chose to set characters in L.A.

Parker loved the Imperial mushroom rolls! He even dunked them in the fish sauce himself. He was actually too preoccupied with watching “Cars” to pay much heed to the chicken pho, but we hand-fed him enough to add up to a decent meal. I had some and it was pretty good. I loved my very adult, dry “pop” of soda water with farmer’s market Meyer lemon, and the fact that luscious oiliness of the eggplant in my noodle salad was balanced out by plenty of fresh salad greens.

I was kind of disappointed in the fries, though — not quite crisp enough, and no garlic or chile in evidence. I think it was cilantro on the fries, but I’m not quite sure because it didn’t stick to them at all. However, I did discover that hoisin and chile sauce make a compelling combo with the mayo.

It’s a nice place that I’d love to have in my neighborhood, but wouldn’t go out of the way for again — because it is rather out of the way — unless it was a halfway point to meet friends.
