Christmas in L.A. is always weird and unusual, since it’s far from your picture-perfect American image of falling snow and fires that roar due to necessity. But last year’s holiday was additionally bizarre — in a GOOD way! — because we hit the ice rink at Pershing Square in downtown, a new winter ritual that our kids got really into at that location, as well as at other rinks around town.
Truly, there are few things so wonderfully surreal as skating in an important downtown L.A. public space (that’s on the verge of a major redesign) in 80 degree weather. Think of it as our quirky version of Rockefeller Center. Expert skaters be warned, however; the railings around that rink are PACKED with newbies hanging on for dear life. Which on the upside, sometimes leaves more room open in the middle for those who can jam on blades.
If you want to experience it for yourself, leave a comment below to be entered into a giveaway for a family 4-pack (skate rental included) to the Pershing Square’s Holiday Ice Rink that’s happening now through January 19th. Deadline is December 18th, noon PST.
