Back to the Indie Scene: Kids’ Cupcake Decorating Class at Auntie Em’s Kitchen

by Jessica on February 22, 2013

There’s a lot of talk of cake decorating in Los Angeles these days, but places west of Fairfax shouldn’t get all the fun.

Auntie Em’s Kitchen and Marketplace in Eagle Rock, which in retrospect was a relative pioneer in that neighborhood scene, is hosting a cupcake decorating class on Sunday, March 24th. Yeah it’s a few weeks away, but time flies. And tempus most certainly fugit when you’re having fun adorning cupcakes. Plus if you’re gonna ever apply the “their first album was their best” indie rock game to the context of cupcakes in L.A., then Auntie Em’s is certainly a contender. (They were doing cupcakes before they were cool and then totally jumped the shark, man!)

Here’s the agenda: kids are set up with all they need to spruce up some cupcakes with whatever creative flourishes strike their fancy with help from owner/chef Terri Wahl. Parents eat appetizers and nurse mimosas. The kitchen will bring out some snacks for the kids too, because small bodies shall not live on cupcakes alone. Good plan, right?

The two-hour session for one kid and one adult costs $30. What an awesome way to spend a Sunday afternoon from 1 to 3:00 p.m. And that leaves just enough time to go to Kidspace to burn off the sugar high, or if your kid wants to keep going in the super crafty zone, Purple Twig afterward.

UPDATE: The class is already sold out, but fret not! Chef Terri has added an additional class scheduled for the week before, on Sunday, March 17th, also from 1 to 3 p.m. Call to reserve your kid’s spot ASAP!
